A Vancouver Artist Seeks the Truth about Joe Fortes

“Seraphim Joe Fortes (or Serafim, as he spelled his name) is a Vancouver icon. He taught generations of children to swim and saved dozens of people from drowning. He’ll forever be associated with his favourite place, English Bay, and his name now adorns a fancy seafood restaurant and a library branch.

But peering deeper into the history of the early colonial city, Vancouver artist and writer Ruby Smith Diaz @tierranegra_arts noticed a contradiction between how Vancouver has celebrated Fortes as a local icon who overcame prejudice, and the racism and violent white supremacy he would have encountered at the time.”
